Roblox game templates
Starting from something that already works is the fastest way to a Roblox game, and a great way to learn. Here are the kinds of "template" you'll find, what each costs, and how to stay safe while using them.
The options at a glance
| Option | Cost | What you get | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio templates | Free | Empty starters and a few small playable games made by Roblox | Few genres; many people start from the same ones |
| Creator Store kits | Free or paid | A system or a whole game made by another creator | Hidden scripts in some free models; kits that don't fit together |
| Uncopylocked games | Free | A copy of a game its owner chose to share | Only what the owner shared; not yours to republish as-is |
| BloxMaps Game Maker | Free to build and preview; $14.99 to export | A game made for your idea: map, UI, shop, gameplay | Builds the genres it knows; the file is a paid export |
Roblox Studio's templates
When Roblox Studio opens, it shows templates: empty starters like Baseplate and Flat Terrain, themed worlds, and small playable games. They're free, made by Roblox, safe, and the scripts are written to be read. Open one, press Play, then look through the Explorer to see how it works. Roblox lists them in its templates docs.
Creator Store kits
The Creator Store (the Toolbox in Studio) has models, scripts and whole kits made by other creators: tycoon kits, obby kits, sword systems, shops. Some are free and some are paid.
Good: huge choice; often you can find exactly the system you need.
Watch out: some free models contain hidden scripts (see using templates safely), and two
kits from different creators often fight over the same things, like who owns the player's money.
Uncopylocked games
A game is "uncopylocked" when its owner allows anyone to make a copy in Studio. Some creators share games this way to teach. Use them to learn how something was built. Republishing someone else's game as your own, or copying a game that wasn't shared, isn't allowed and can get your game taken down. "Uncopylocked" copies offered on other websites are the riskiest of all: you don't know what was added.
A generated game, made for your idea
Instead of starting from a fixed template, the BloxMaps Game Maker builds a game from your description: "a tycoon where you run a candy factory", "a horror game in an abandoned hospital". It makes the map, UI, a shop wired to Roblox's purchase prompts and the gameplay systems, in one Roblox Studio file, so every part is made to work together. It covers 18 genres; see them as game ideas.
To be clear about cost: building and previewing a game is free, and you can see it before paying. The Roblox Studio file is a paid export ($14.99 once per game, or included with the Studio plan; pricing). Games made on the Free plan show in the public games gallery (pictures, name and prompt, never the file).
Using any template safely
- Search for scripts. In the Explorer's search box, type
Scriptto list every script in the place, including ones hidden deep inside models. - Read the suspicious ones. Be careful with code that uses
require()with a long number, orgetfenv/loadstring, or text that's scrambled on purpose. Those are common ways to hide a backdoor. - Delete what you don't need. A tree model doesn't need a script.
- Keep secrets out of shared files. Never put passwords or keys in scripts you share.
Which one should you pick?
- Learning Studio? Start with Roblox's own templates: they're free, safe and easy to read.
- Need one system (a sword, a door, a leaderboard)? A well-reviewed Creator Store model, checked for hidden scripts.
- Want a whole game in a genre to start from? A generated game, built for your idea, with every system made to work together.
- Curious how a game was built? An uncopylocked game its owner shared, opened only to learn from.
Making a template yours
Every template starts out looking like everyone else's. Change the theme, the names, the colours and the UI, add one mechanic that only your game has, and write your own description and thumbnails. That's what turns a template into a game people remember. For the next steps, read how to publish a Roblox game.
Questions
Where do I find Roblox game templates?
Roblox Studio shows its own templates when it opens. The Creator Store has free and paid kits made by other creators. BloxMaps builds a game for your idea instead of a fixed template.
Are uncopylocked games safe to use?
Only use a game its owner chose to share, check every script for backdoors, and don't republish someone else's game as yours: that breaks Roblox's rules.
Are BloxMaps games free templates?
No. Building and previewing a game is free, but the Roblox Studio file is a paid export ($14.99 once per game, or included with the Studio plan).
Do I still need Roblox Studio?
Yes, to publish. BloxMaps makes the game file in your browser; you open that file in Roblox Studio (free, for Windows and Mac) and publish it to Roblox from there.
