How to publish a Roblox game

Your game works in Studio. Now let's get it onto Roblox where friends can play: publishing, making it public, the maturity questionnaire, an icon, thumbnails and a description, plus what to check before you tell anyone.

Updated ยท by the BloxMaps team

1. Before you publish

  • Play it start to finish in Studio and watch the Output window for red errors.
  • Test with 2 players from the Test tab. Bugs that only show up with other players are common.
  • Check it on a phone screen with Studio's device emulator: buttons too small or off-screen are the most common phone problem.
  • Remove test stuff: admin buttons, debug prints, free models you didn't check.
  • Turn on what your scripts need in Game Settings, for example Enable Studio Access to API Services for DataStores while testing.

2. Publish from Studio

  1. In Roblox Studio, choose File > Publish to Roblox.
  2. The first time, pick Create new experience. Choose the owner: your own account, or a group you can create in. Games made under a group belong to the group.
  3. Give it a name and a short description (you can change both later), then press Create.
  4. Your game is now on Roblox, but private: only you can join it.

Roblox's publishing docs show the current screens.

3. Make it public

  1. Open Creator Hub > Creations and pick your game.
  2. Fill in the maturity and compliance questionnaire. It asks about things like violence, blood, fear, romance and social features. Your answers set the game's content label and who can play it. Answer honestly: a wrong label can get the game moderated.
  3. Set the experience to public in its settings (in Creator Hub, or in Studio under Game Settings > Permissions).
  4. Join from the Roblox app on another device to check it really works for other people.

4. Icon, thumbnails and description

Players decide in a second or two whether to click, so this part matters as much as the game.

  • Icon: a square image that reads at a tiny size: one big character or object, bright colours, little or no text.
  • Thumbnails: 16:9 images, ideally 1920x1080, up to 10 images or videos on the game's page, according to Roblox's thumbnail guide. Show real gameplay moments, not just the logo.
  • Description: say what players do in the first line ("Hatch pets, unlock worlds and rebirth for bigger multipliers"), then the controls and what's new. Plain words beat a wall of emoji.
  • Genre and settings: set the genre, the devices it supports and the server size in the game's settings.

5. Updating your game

Make your changes in Studio and publish again with File > Publish to Roblox. Players who join new servers get the new version; servers that were already running keep the old one until they close. You can restart them from your game's page on Creator Hub when an update is important. Regular updates, with a short "what's new" in the description, are one of the best ways to keep players coming back.

6. Common problems

  • "This experience is private" or friends can't join: it isn't public yet (step 3), or the content label keeps some players out.
  • Saving doesn't work: DataStores only work in a published game, or in Studio with API access on.
  • Sounds or models missing for other players: assets uploaded privately by someone else won't load in your game. Use your own uploads or Creator Store assets.
  • The shop says "not for sale": the game passes and developer products don't exist yet or their IDs aren't in the game. See game passes and developer products.
  • Teleports fail in Studio: they only work in the published game.

7. Publishing a .rbxl file (from BloxMaps or anywhere)

A .rbxl file is a whole Roblox place saved as a file. To publish one:

  1. Double-click it, or open Studio and use File > Open from File.
  2. Press Play to check it works.
  3. Publish it exactly as above: File > Publish to Roblox, then make it public.

Games from the BloxMaps Game Maker come as a .rbxl with the shop already built in. After publishing, you create its game passes and developer products on Creator Hub and add their IDs; our How to publish your game page walks through that for BloxMaps files step by step. Questions

Is publishing a Roblox game free?

Yes. Publishing and keeping a game on Roblox doesn't cost anything.

Why can't other people play my game?

It's probably still private. New games start private; answer the maturity questionnaire and make the experience public in its settings.

Can I publish from a phone?

Publishing a Studio file needs Roblox Studio on a Windows PC or Mac. Roblox's Build alpha in the Roblox app can publish what it makes, in the countries where it's available.

How do I update my game after publishing?

Change it in Studio and publish again (File > Publish to Roblox). Servers already running keep the old version until they restart; you can restart them from Creator Hub.

Is BloxMaps free?

Making and previewing is free: 3 previews a day on the Free plan. You pay only to export. You only pay to export the finished Roblox Studio file (.rbxl): $14.99 once per game, or included with the Studio plan. See pricing.
