How to make a game like Murder Mystery 2
Murder Mystery 2 is one of the longest-running Roblox hits, built on a round that anyone understands in seconds: one murderer, one sheriff, everyone else trying to survive. Here's how a murder mystery round game works and how to build your own.
BloxMaps is not affiliated with Roblox or with the developers of Murder Mystery 2. This page describes the kind of game in our own words so you can make your own, original one.
How the loop works
- Lobby. Players wait between rounds, open crates, equip skins and vote for the next map.
- Roles. When the round starts, the game secretly picks one murderer and one sheriff. Everyone else is innocent. Each player only sees their own role.
- The round. The murderer tries to catch everyone with a knife without being spotted. The sheriff has a gun and one chance to find the murderer: shooting an innocent is a mistake. Innocents hide, watch, and collect coins on the map.
- The hero. If the sheriff goes down, they drop the gun, and any innocent who picks it up becomes the hero.
- The end. The round ends when the murderer is caught, when everyone else is out, or when the timer runs out. Coins and wins go toward cosmetics, and everyone heads back to the lobby.
Why it works: hidden roles create stories ("it was HIM?!"), rounds are short, and every round on a new map with new roles feels different. Cosmetic knives and guns give players something to collect without changing who wins.
The systems you need
- A round manager: intermission, map vote, role pick, round timer, results, back to the lobby.
- Maps: several maps with lots of rooms, corners and hiding spots, each with spawn points. Round maps are usually kept in ServerStorage and loaded one at a time.
- Roles: picked on the server and sent to each player privately (never to everyone).
- Weapons: a knife (melee and throw) and a gun with a cooldown, with hits checked on the server.
- Coins on the map: pickups that spawn during the round.
- Cosmetics: crates and an inventory of skins, saved per player. Show crate odds, and keep them cosmetic.
Building it in Roblox Studio
- The lobby and one map. Put the map in ServerStorage with a folder of spawn parts.
- The round loop. A server Script that waits for enough players, counts down, clones the map into Workspace, teleports players to spawns, runs a timer, then cleans up. Show the countdown with a value every client's UI reads.
- Roles. Shuffle the players, pick the first as murderer and the second as sheriff, give them their Tool, and tell each player their role with a RemoteEvent fired to them only.
- Win checks. After every elimination, check: is the murderer out? Is everyone else out? End the round with the right result.
- Map voting. Pick 3 random maps at the end of each round, let players vote in the lobby, load the winner.
- Coins and cosmetics. Coin pickups during the round, saved with a DataStore, and a crate that gives a random skin with the odds shown.
Exploiters love round games: never send roles to everyone, and check every hit on the server (was the attacker close enough? is it their weapon?).
Make it yours (and keep it allowed)
Lots of Roblox hits start as "a game like X, but...". That's fine. What isn't fine, under Roblox's rules and copyright law, is copying: another game's name, logo, characters, art, sounds, map or scripts. Copies also tend to get reported and taken down, and players can tell. To make the format yours:
- Change the theme. Different world, different creatures or items, different mood.
- Add one rule of your own. A twist on the loop that only your game has.
- Use your own names and art, or assets you have the right to use from the Creator Store.
- Pick your own title. Don't put another game's name in yours to borrow its players.

The Game Maker's murder mystery format builds the round game: a lobby with crates, the map vote and countdown, secret murderer and sheriff, coins for innocents, and knife and gun skins. On the Studio plan a round-based game can have up to 4 round maps. It's in Beta.
